Drawing of the Ring Nebula

Image
Finally, I could set up my Obsession telescope again. I tried to make a drawing of M57.  I think the drawing is not to bad, but the location of the stars could certainly improve a bit.  During set up of my telescope, I accidently broke the motor of my equatorial platform.  I hope I can still repair it.

Lunar Eclipse somewhere in Paraguay

Image
We already forgot that a lunar eclipse would be visible from South-America.  We were on a bus from Paraguay to Argentina, when Lotte saw the moon rise.  She told us that the moon was different tonight and indeed, there was a lunar eclipse going on!

In San Pedro de Atacama, Chile, we visited a small meteor museum.  There were at least 50 different meteors.  A nice little museum to visit when you are in San Pedro de Atacama.

On the beach in La Serena, we saw an amazing sunset.  The very young moon could be seen together with crepuscular rays in a beautiful setting.

Total Solar Eclipse in Chile

Image
During the Total Solar Eclipse in the US , we already decided to watch the 2019 Total Solar Eclipse in Chile. As our little girl is 6 years old now, we only can travel during the school holidays.  So, we left for South-America on the last day of school. We made an amazing trip through Chile, Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentinia and Brazil. The eclipse happened in the beginning of our trip.  While we waited for the plane from Santiago de Chile to La Serena, everybody was already talking about the eclipse.  The weather was bad in Santiago, but once we landed in La Serena, we were spoiled with an amazing blue sky. During totality, we were located in the Elqui valley in Chile.  It was not possible to see the eclipse from the house we rented, because the the sun was already too low in the sky during totality.  To be sure that we could see the eclipse, we climbed a mountain in Alcohuaz, where we could enjoy the eclipse from an altitude of around 2000m, only surrounded by nature and so

Southern Milky Way in Pisco Elqui, Chile

Image
The sky is really very dark here in Pisco Elqui, Chile.  Perfect moment to take some nightscapes of the milky way.  There was a bit of light pollution lower in the valley, which made the mountains very good visible on the pictures.

Eclipse fever in La Serena, Chile

Image
On our way to Pisco Elqui, Chile, to observe the total solar eclipse of July 2, 2019, we clearly felt the eclipse fever in La Serena.  The airport was full of information panels and at the airport everyone, including the police officers, was talking about the coming eclipse.

Noctilucent Clouds

Image
Tonight, we could enjoy very bright noctilucent clouds.  They were really bright and high in the sky.  An amazing view!

La Palma 2019

Image
During a technical mission at La Palma, I could make some nice pictures.  I used the Sigma 10mm f/2.8 lens for the first time and I'm very impressed with the pictures.  The zodiacal light is very easy to see. A group of amateur astronomers from Belgium and the Netherlands came to the Mercator telescope to do some observing with their own telescopes.  The weather looked very promising at the beginning of the night, but sadly once it was really dark, the humidity rose to 100% and we could not observe...
